John Donnelly joined Burness in January 2008 from the Boston Globe, where he was a distinguished health and science correspondent. Regarded as one of the world's leading global health reporters, he conducted in-depth reporting for the Globe on health and international issues from locales around the world, most recently from Africa, where he was the paper's bureau chief for three years.
A highlight of his coverage over the past 15 years was his work directing and writing much of the Globe's award-winning Lives Lost series, recounting through words and photos the stories of people from Appalachia to Zambia who died for lack of basic, simple interventions taken for granted in wealthier settings.
Prior to joining the Globe, he was the Middle East correspondent for The Miami Herald, based in Jerusalem and Cairo for four years. He has also worked for The Associated Press in Vermont and New York City. John spent 2007 as a journalism fellow with the Kaiser Family Foundation, where he worked on a project that examined how Americans are trying to help orphans and vulnerable children in Africa.
At Burness, John works primarily on the Global Health and Science team across a variety of projects in health and agriculture. He also assists our Health Policy and Public Health teams, writing compelling copy about U.S. health and health care issues, working as an editor to our younger writers, and serving as a media trainer in our Health and Science Advocacy Institute.
John grew up in Vermont, and still misses all four seasons there -- summer, fall, winter, and mud. He lives with his wife Laura and their three children, Paige, Gavin, and Wyatt in Chevy Chase, Md.
