Washington D.C. area Nonprofits

As a member of the Washington, D.C.-area community, Burness Communications is proud to advance social change in our own community.

Burness mantains an active practice in support of DC-area organizations, helping local nonprofits communicate their missions. Much of our local work has supported projects to expand health care access for underserved people, and we have also trained local nonprofit leaders to develop and articulate messages that are effective in reaching both the news media and policymakers.

Burness has:

  • Supported the Consumer Health Foundation’s dedication to health justice for underserved populations in the Washington, D.C. area.
  • Worked with the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation to tell the stories of its work with high-achieving, low-income students.
  • Supported the Arlington Free Clinic in its work to provide quality, free medical care to those who cannot afford it.
  • Provided strategic counsel to the Nonprofit Roundtable in its advocacy as the area’s voice for the nonprofit sector.

Consumer Health Foundation

The mission of the Consumer Health Foundation is to achieve health justice in the Washington, D.C. region through activities that advance the health and well being of historically under served communities. We support initiatives that empower consumers to make decisions and take actions that improve personal, family and community health.

We envision a region and nation in which everyone - regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status - has an equal opportunity to live a healthy and dignified life.

Improving Health Care in Metropolitan Washington, D.C.

Improving Health Care in Metropolitan Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. is not a healthy city. Compared to the rest of the U.S., the D.C. metropolitan area has higher than average rates of heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and infant mortality—as well as one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in the country. Not surprisingly, the most dire health statistics are found in the region’s low-income and minority neighborhoods.
